Keita Juma - Zen Mode (Album)
I’ve been keeping tabs on Keita Juma for a while now. I think he first appeared on my radar when I heard his track “Holy” somewhere. Was probably Benji B thinking about.
I don’t really comment much MC’s lyrically. I think I’m more a cadence and flow kind of guy but Keita definitely has some different bars. He’s a very minimal guy in production and lyrical sense I feel.
The dude has some pretty awesome beats for a hip hop artist. He does the dark and brooding sounds at a top level. Something that not many artists can perfect but as a relatively unknown artist he definitely stands on his own as someone who gets on these kind of beats.
This album has some really pretty beats on it as well as the dark and heavy stuff I obviously love. “Nature”, “Numba One”, “Pools” and “Nice” are gorgeous beats. The synths are pretty and the percussion is nice and the lyrics are really positive. “Nice” is especially pretty. The drum track and mixdowns are perfect.
”Heroes All Praise Due” is probably one of the weirder sounding tracks in a minute and I geniunely love it. It might be my favourite track on the entire project. It’s so minimal and the entire thing has some very real clap samples as the main percussion on top of a nice 808.
Majority of the rest of the album is the weird and dark Keita I really got into. “Juju Love” goes off. “Stretch” is a great version of a trap beat track that Keita would do.
The last track “Surely We Can All Agree To Add Another Day”, is an electro synth beat that I guarantee he’s got lyrics for but didn’t put in this project that I’d really love to hear. If you ever read this Keita and you have a raw thing with you on this for sure send me it.
I’m always going to be a big fan of somebody doing something that’s completely different and completely them. This album is that. Nobody is doing things like Keita Juma. He’s a great representation of what everyone bedroom producer and rapper is hoping to do. Super cool project.
